GridLiance Heartland is a transmission-only utility formed to partner with power generators and transmission owners to improve the reliability and resiliency of the grid.
In March 2020, GridLiance Heartland closed its acquisition of high voltage transmission lines interconnected to the Joppa Generation Station in Illinois from Electric Energy, Inc (EEI), a subsidiary of Vistra Energy. With the acquisition, GridLiance gains access to the Mid-continent Independent System Operator, Inc. (MISO) Regional Transmission Organization system. GridLiance Heartland acquired six 16-kV transmission lines that cross the Ohio River and related substation infrastructure. In addition, six EEI transmission system operators joined GridLiance to help manage the operation of the acquired transition assets.
The six transmission lines are approximately 8-10 miles in length. The six lines were originally constructed to power the U.S. Department of Energy’s now-defunct Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant but were disconnected from the plant in 2017. Four of the lines connect with TVA, while the other two connect with the Louisville Gas & Electric/Kentucky Utilities balancing authority area.
These six assets are currently outside the MISO footprint and are expected to be transferred to MISO control by 2020 (four immediately, two over time). GridLiance is participating now in planning studies to determine how the lines can be optimized to solve documented transmission constraints, in particular lessening the strain on the transfer constraint linking MISO’s Midwest and South subregions.
