In 2017, the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) identified electric transmission limitations on the Sloan Canyon to Mead transmission line, dimming the prospects for future solar development. In essence, there was congestion on the 15-mile transmission line that would impact delivery and the cost of energy in the region. CAISO subsequently authorized a $25 million line rebuild, which began in 2019 and is expected to be completed in Fall 2020.
The project requires an understanding of environmental constraints due to the sensitive location of an existing line, as well as handling significant line crossings and utility coordination, and permitting and coordination with multiple federal and state agencies. Among the projected benefits of the completed project, according to CAISO, will be a savings over the 40-year life of the project of approximately $180 million.
